Our style editor Jessica Hanson shares her tips on getting started with pattern – inspired by this stunning Swedish home

1. Patterned cushions are a great way to start. They’ll add colour and interest to a sofa or bed without a costly commitment.

2. Consider wallpaper if you want to step it up a notch. Start by wallpapering a single wall, or a small entry or room, then work your way up to covering a larger space.

3. Ready to mix patterns? Think about scale and colour. Set small prints against larger ones, limit your colour palette and include one solid element (your sofa, floor or wall) to give the eye a place to rest.
