For those of us who don’t consume their Cadbury stocking in bed by 9am, the main feasting event on Christmas day usually takes place at a dining table. Here are four fun ways to style yours this year.

1. A little bit rustic

Be inspired by nature and create a festive theme that can be sourced from your own backyard. Think garlands, pinecones and leafy centerpieces. Use twine to tie everything together and finish with fairy lights to create some warmth.

2. Gold & white

If you’re a little fancy (and not afraid of stains), white and gold could be the theme for you. Use a crisp white table runner as a base for your gold-trimmed serving plates, separated by candle holders of the same colour.  Toast to your styling success with elegant, icy glasses.

3. Traditional

Red, white and green enthusiasts are always spoiled for choice when it comes to crockery, so let it be the star. Keep your napkins and tablecloths quite neutral, but get creative with smaller details, like using holly as your napkin rings or making your own bauble placeholders.

4. Kid-friendly

Sometimes the aim of a sit down meal is just to keep the kids seated long enough for you to enjoy your glazed ham. Use brown paper as your table cloth, sprinkled with confetti to add some festive colour. Keep pencils and crayons at the kids places, so they can go nuts and draw on the tablecloth as soon as they get bored. Use novelty glasses for placeholders and extra distractions, which will also make for your funniest family photo yet.
