Hanging up your coat becomes a stylish moment with these unique stands

the original: Artek ‘Clothes Tree 160’

The form: A timber coat stand with spiralling pegs that reference the branches of birch trees.
What makes it special: The simple rounded Nordic appearance of this piece, designed by Finnish interior architect Anna-Maija Jaatinen in 1964, defines the modern Scandinavian look and has formed the basis for many rival coat stand designs since it was released. Made from solid birch – a close-grained timber in plentiful supply in Nordic territories – the clothes tree offers quality with refined functionality. The tripod metal base makes it suitable for use on uneven floors while the spiralling hanging pegs decrease in size at lower levels to facilitate the hanging of bags. Standing at 177cm tall, the coat stand has 20 individual pegs to provide plenty of space for jackets, hats and just about everything else you might need to hang. The clothes tree comes in four finishes, all-black lacquered, natural birch with a black foot, natural birch with a white foot or all-white lacquered.
Expect to pay: From $1249.

the up-and-comer: Mater ‘Trumpet’ coat stand

The form: A two-metre-high coat stand with nine exaggerated trumpet-shaped pegs in three different sizes.
What makes it special: The shape of the coat stand is utterly different from every other option available. With its apparently random trumpet-shaped pegs and undulating central stem, the design is as much a sculptural piece for the hallway or entrance area as it is a practical item for everyday use. Designed by Danish architect duo Space Copenhagen in 2009, the coat stand forms part of an ethically sourced collection of furniture and lighting pieces
by Danish company, Mater Design. Made in India, the product comes in two quite different materials and finishes: sand-cast recycled aluminium, polished up to a shine as part of the Susbiz India sustainable manufacturing program, or in turned birch stained black. The design packs flat for ease of transportation and a reduced carbon footprint.
Expect to pay: From $1100.
