Lucky Melbournians have, for quite some time, been treated to the modern stylings of Tait Outdoor furniture store. Now, expanding from their southern headquarters, husband and wife Gordon and Susan Tait have brought to Sydney the all-Australian contemporary designs they’ve become famous for. Typically, they had input in every element of the move. “Gordon and I are very hands-on and were keen to create the Sydney showroom ourselves,” says Susan. The couple enlisted the help of Ryan Russell, who designed their Melbourne store, to translate the overall concept to Sydney, including the colour palette he concocted specially for Tait. “Ryan also developed a fantastic system of stacking pallets, to create height and focused display areas throughout the showroom. They allow our furniture to be hero,” Susan says.
The modern designs of Tait Outdoor furniture reflect the strong focus the company places on its Australian heritage. Susan maintains this surprises customers, who too often mistake the clean confident pieces as “international”. But the Taits are passionate about fostering the local design community; every piece stocked by Tait Outdoor is made in Australia, and the store caters for broad markets – architectural to retail, indoor and outdoor, commercial and residential. This season, be on the lookout for the Jak + Jil range, designed by Justin Hutchinson, and the new Air-Liner collection by local Sydney designer Adam Goodrum.
“It’s bound to be swooned over,” says Susan with well-deserved assurance. Tait Outdoor, 611 Elizabeth St, Redfern, NSW.
