Where on earth do you start when planning a renovation? When do you book your trades, order your tiles, find alternative accommodation? The daunting prospect of planning can put you off the idea even before it’s got to the drawing board! Here’s a guideline to the order in which your renovation should come together when those plans are approved:
12 months before – compile a moodboard.
6-12 months before – visit showrooms and price up ideas.
6 months before – set your budget, call the bank about loans (if required).
5 months before – make appointments with kitchen and/or bathroom specialists for concepts and costings.
4-5 months before – make a decision on using separate contractors or bathroom and/or kitchen specialist.
4 months before –get quotes from tradespeople and check planning permission.
3 months before – finalise start/finish date.
2 months before – finalise fittings, fixtures and appliances.
1 month before – choose finishes, such as your splash back and tiles and book alternative accommodation if necessary.
1 month before finish date – organise painters.
1-2 weeks before finish date – book carpet and house cleaners.
